“Today, I have kitchen duty. Tomorrow, toilet duty. Basically kitchen duty involves at least two hours of
boiling water from snow. Three and a half liters in the morning and evening for me. Three for Anders. We immediately drink a liter of water each when we wake up to rehydrate.
Then two liters during the hauling and then a liter in the evening. Food consists of dried frozen meals in the morning and evening, plus a starter of noodles and soup in the evening. Sausage, cheese, and rye bread in the morning, or like today my favorite, mash! We eat some carb-heavy desserts, too, which are least a 1000-calories.
During the hauling, at least 8 1/2 hours a day, we have 10-min breaks every hour where we eat Pringles, nuts, chocolate bars (200 grams a day), mango, cookies, pastries, and anything with lots of carbs!
I have lost a lot of weight, probably 5-6 kgs, for the better and I feel in better shape now than I was two weeks ago.
The last three days have been freezing, -20 degrees C, but we have advanced closer to the biggest challenge of the trip, the Western Icefall with its huge crevasses to be negotiated.
If all goes well we should be off the ice in 4-6 days.
Now it’s time for sleep. Hopefully, 7.5 hours. I sleep very well.
