Report 3: The Nansen Icecrossing

Report 3: The Nansen Icecrossing, August 21 2024

Hi my name is Eva, Mikaels daughter. My dad will be going to Greenland for a month and a half to ski across the icecap. When he is gone both me and Hannah will be writing his posts for him so you know how he is progressing. He will be calling by satellite every 3 days and I will write what he says from his perspective.

Another surreal day. We have climbed 1,773 meters from sea level from where we first arrived, and are still climbing. We are in the Eastern weather zone until we reach the summit at 2,600 meters (8,530 ft). Then we enter the Western weather zone which usually is kinder. So far we have been lucky with the weather. Sure we had a whiteout day yesterday, tricky navigation, strong winds of up to 20 m/s (45 mph) and strong sun. Even rain. But I had expected much worse. It may still come (bad weather). Weather is unpredictable in Greenland in general, but this time of the year even more so.

It is hard going, for sure. 8 hauls a day, 55 minutes with 10-minute breaks. No time wasting. We are still a team of four, and it makes the hard work easier. It is a great team! In fact, one of the highlights of the trip so far has been sharing the tent with amazing Anders, with his great knowledge of Arctic survival. He is an amazing young man, a 40-year-old bachelor who shows me such respect and dignity, even personally tapping my foot. This guy is a blessing and a real outdoor fella with a huge heart.

It is a privilege to be here with him and the other two: Kathinka, who I introduced from a previous post, and a very pleasant Danish military man with the Special Corps.”

This is a Kensington Tours Expedition
