Lokal värme/Local warming

Jul är på gång, men nästan ingen snö för tomten att landa på med sina renar. Eller hundsläde som han använder lokalt. Idag är det ett par minusgrader ute bara, en lätt vind och frågan är om det blir en riktigt vit jul eller inte? Igår gjorde jag samma vända som innan snön kom löpmässigt, ut på Nussuaq näset och tillbaka. Isigt, men det gick. Storslagna vyer, absolut, men det är klart den första tanken vi får här då familjen, är detta del i den större globala uppvärmning, eller är det bara lokala förändringar?

Att förändringar sker hör jag hela tiden. Jag hade nog trott innan ankomst att det skulle finnas tydliga klimatskeptiker här, och det kanske det gör, men ingen jag pratat med motsäger sig det faktum att en ganska snabb uppvärmning är på gång. Kanske tydligast märks det hos fiskarna som fått tillgång till stora mängder torsk på nära håll, samtidigt som den grönländska hälleflundran simmar norröver. De som har hundar är oroade så klart, många i Diskobukten har ju tvingats avliva sina hundar till följd av uppvärmning. Finns ingen is att köra på. Och skotern är både billigare och snabbare.

Lika jobbigt för årstiden är ju att det blir mörkare och lite dystrare där ute. Jag har flera bekanta som har svårt att ta sig upp ur sängen och känner av depressioner. Det tar tid att anpassa sig till det ”eviga” mörkret, men generellt tycker jag familjen hanterar det bra. För oss är ju det första året av mörker bara spännande, så försöker vi vara ute den lilla tid det är ljust och även om det är mörkt, vara ute. Så för oss är det nog lika mycket en sorts julstämning mest hela tiden. Och tempot är mycket lugnare, men även det tar sin tid att anpassa sig till. Hjärnskakningen hjälper, men jag vill u inte kasta bort tiden med att bara sitta still!

Fördelen är ju att elen och oljan inte drar iväg, men vi vill ju ha en iskall snöig vinter. Toppen nyheten är att ni har vi Internet utan förbehåll och om man tänker efter på hur geografiskt isolerade vi är, så är ju det fantastiskt!

Christmas is coming up, but there´s hardly any snow to land with his reindeers on. Or arrive by dogsled as the local variety does. Right now, there´s just a couple of degrees below zero Celsius, a light wind and the question is, will we get a white Christmas or not? Yesterday I did a trail run which it was over a month since I last did, on the Nussuaq peninsula, icy but not any major problems. Great views as usual, but the first thought we get here, the family, is of course, is this warmth part of the global warming or a local one?

Nobody is denying there´s a constant warming and many changes. When I first arrived I had a feeling the local view of climate change would differ to the global, but I haven´t met one denier yet, on the contrary, everyone I talked to about the subject, points out the quick and dramatic changes in their lives and the surroundings. Most of all for the fisherman, who suddenly have large quantities of cod arriving, which is great for them, because they´re hard to catch for the big trawlers, but the Greenlandic halibut is heading north. Quite a dramatic change. And those who have dogs, still many, they´re worried of course, because many in the Disko Bay area, have had to put their dogs down due to the arrival of the cheaper snowmobile plus the lack of sea ice.

And there´s no doubt that the lack of snow makes the surroundings even darker and sadder. I know quite a few who find it hard to get up every morning and feel a deep depression. And it does take some time to adapt to this “eternal” darkness, but as a whole, I have to say the family is handling it quite well. For us, since it is our first year, it is exciting and fun and right now it does have a permanent feel of Christmas. We spend as much time outdoors as possible, when there´s light or not. Life is also way more laidback, which is hard for me to adjust to who have to do a million things all the time, but I am beginning to like it. The concussion helps of course.

The advantage of a warmer time, is that the oil and electricity bills are lower than expected. And, the great news, thanks to a certain degree to local lad Knud, we have a flatrate Internet with no limits and good speed, which I find extraordinary considering the isolation, geography and situation!
