6 books for better understanding England
The UK Polls are open and I will be following the developments. It was an overall turn out of only 65% in the last one, 2010, and that is extremely worrying. But I understand, because one of the most voiced opinions during the England experience 2013-2014 was the massive distrust people I came across felt in politics and especially politicians. Since August 2013 up until today I have read a lot of books on the UK and especially on the English and there are six books which stand out for me as making up quite a good picture of the island and the English in particular.
1. Andrew Marr, A History Of Modern Britain. This covers the developments in the Uk after the second world war. Andrew Marr is great at putting interesting and insightful stories which makes a difference together. A must read.
2. Jeremy Paxman, The English. A funny and informative book about who, possibly, the English are. For example, why the English actually enjoy being persecuted.
3. Kate Fox, Watching The English, The Hidden Rules of English Behavior. A must to understand the oddities of the English. Like understanding the English pub!
4. Andrew Marr, The Making Of Modern Britain. This book covers the time from Queen Victoria to VE Day. Another important Marr book. Andrew Marr is great at putting interesting and insightful stories which makes a difference together. A must read.
5. Tony Blair, A Journey. No matter what one thinks about Tony Blair, he does write very well and it gives an insight into the politics of Modern Britain. Indeed interesting!
6. Nick Danziger, Danziger´s Britain, A Journey To The Edge. A harrowing book, but needed about a side of the UK which seldom comes up in media, the poverty and the divisions between rich and poor. A must read!
These 6 books will give you a good overall insight to modern Britain and it´s inhabitants.
